What is the AAR:
AAR is the abbreviation for the American Association of Railroads. The
AAR is a body composed of representatives from member railroads and
suppliers. The AAR forms committees out of these members, and other
interested parties. These committees help self regulate the industry
and provide for the smooth flow of interchange traffic, and standards for
the repair of railcars and locomotives, from one railcar shop to another
railcar shop. For more information on the Association of American
Railroads visit http://www.aar.org .
What is M-1003:
M-1003 is the AAR's answer to the need of a quality standards specific to
the needs of the North American Railroads in building railcars, repair, and
rebuilding of railcars. These standards also apply to the
manufacture, repair, rebuilding, of railcar parts.
The AAR M-1003 is modeled like ISO-9002 with the addition of a few Criteria
specific to the needs of the railcar industry.
