These wheelsets had markings that
indicated that they were manufactured in the 1920's and 1930's! These
particular wheelsets are narrow gage and friction bearing. On these
wheelsets we turned and burnished the friction bearing journals and then
set them up and a tracer equipped lathe and re-profiled the tread.

Since 1968
Texas Tank Car Works has machined the bearing journals on railroad axles
with the wheels mounted. We can do this for wheelsets going into
Interchange Service or for Industrial Captive Use Only.
This wheelset pictured to the right is a passenger car wheelset that we
converted to 5 1/2" x 10" roller bearing journals on 5" x
9" frame centers.
Frame center is defined as the distance from bearing center to the opposite
bearing's center. This is the area where the truck frame rides on the
bearings. That is the "Frame Center Distance". This
is a very important measurement when making special axles.

The picture to the left is really a
"special wheelset"! This one wheeled axle was custom made
out of a 100 ton railroad axle. It is simply a 6 1/2" x 12"
bearing journal on each side of one wheel. This wheelset was made to
mount a large conveyor on and move the whole conveyor on a pivot .

Pictured to
the right is a bearing journal axle end in our American 3220 CNC
Lathe. This particular axle was a worn out
6 1/2" x 12" roller bearing axle that is in the process of being
downsized in our lathe to a 6" x 11" new roller bearing
axle. These axles, for Interchange Service, are all machined and
inspected to AAR Standards.
